At St Mary’s, the power of invitational prayer can be seen and felt across the school.
In addition to our daily Collective Worship (please see the tab above), the whole school community are invited to take part in prayer at different times of the day. All classrooms have their own reflection areas and we also have a whole school reflection area and prayer space in the lobby, where children can come and play times and lunchtimes to think, reflect and pray.
The theme of our whole school reflection area changes each term with our focus value and memory verse. Children are invited to think through the lens of our focus, or indeed to write or draw a prayer of their own.
Annually, in September every class writes a class prayer to help get their year off to a good start. Everyone in the class has an opportunity to contribute their thoughts and reflections through the lens of the Parable of the Mustard Seed and our school vision.
Take a look at our 2024 Start the Year Class Prayers our 2023 Start the Year Class Prayers.
We also, regularly write prayers as part of our class based collective worship – here are a selection from Class based worship where we were thinking about Spiritual ‘WOW’ moments.
Here are a few examples of reflections and prayers shared (with permission from some of our youngest pupils):
God’s door is always open and still, His light shines – a perfect will. A place of peace, I have no fear, I know His door is always near.

Dear God, we know you are with us in all the up and down times. Amen

The Lord’s prayer: We teach and recite the Lord’s prayer regularly, looking at the words carefully and what it means for Christians today. We have even learned how to recite lines of the Lord’s prayer in British Sign Language.
At St. Mary’s, we are very outward facing and try to spend time thinking about and praying for others. For example, our prayers of intercession every Thursday always include reference to global, national or local events.
