The government provide additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary schools. The money must be used to improve the provision of P.E and school sport.
P.E and school sport play a very important part in the life of St. Mary’s School. We believe that P.E and school sport contribute to the holistic development of our children and through participation, our children build and learn more about key values such as respect, unity, co-operation and kindness for themselves and others.
We are therefore delighted that in 2024/25 that we will be able to use the approximate £17,800 sport premium funding to support the development of P.E and play equipment. We have been able to provide all classes from Reception to Year 6 with a weekly coached P.E session, which has been led by a specialist P.E teacher from All for Sport;this has also enabled staff to further develop their skills in teaching PE.
Pupil evaluations of the coached P.E sessions:
“I really like the teamwork that we had to use to play the variety of games”
“We learned so many new games – tag rugby and basketball were my favourites”
“The coaches were really good and patient; they explained all the rules so we could all play and learn well”
“In Y6, we could lead the warm ups – that was great!”
“It’s so important to stay fit – I’ve learned new games that I can play with my friends too”
“We’ve learned lots of new sports vocabulary”
“Next year, we’d like longer sessions please!”
Staff evaluations:
The teachers have benefited immensely by having the opportunity to work with specialist colleagues from All for Sport. The staff have commented on the impact this has made on their understanding of assessment in PE and also on the range of activities that can be taught to cover the National Curriculum PE programmes of study. By having the opportunity to take part in the ‘coach led’ session and then leading the follow up lesson, teachers have felt that they have developed themselves professionally which had enabled the children to maximise their learning in PE.
