24 Oct Workshop on Breaking Barriers: Black British History Makers
On Tuesday, KS2 took part in a workshop on Breaking Barriers: Black British History Makers. The children discovered the remarkable stories of four Black British figures: Jacques Francis, Claudia Jones, Sislen Fay Allen, and Stormzy.
Inspiring stories and achievements were shared about each person, shedding light on the often-forgotten contributions of Black people in Britain. Through interactive storytelling and role play, the children learnt about the barriers these individuals overcame and how they contributed to making the world a fairer place. The session encouraged the children to understand the impact of structural racism and inspired them to help break down these barriers, so everyone is empowered to be the best version of themselves.
Our children engaged with the workshop brilliantly and were totally inspired by what they had learnt. Here are some quotes that children said when discussing it with their teachers afterwards:
‘We may all be different in many ways, but we’re all children of God.’
‘It doesn’t matter where you are from, you can go anywhere.’
‘Even though we are all different, we should all be treated equally.’
‘Different people, same souls.’
‘I enjoyed helping to break down the barriers.’
‘We found out that Stormzy paid people’s tuition so they could get an education.’
‘Dada taught us all about Black History.’
‘All four of the people made a change in history and broke barriers.’
‘The barriers represented how they changed the world in a very good way.’
