21 Oct Y2 Celebrating Black History: Bessie Coleman
As part of their History unit of work and tying in with Black History Month, Y2 have been finding out about the life of Bessie Coleman. Bessie was the first black female aviator. Here are a few facts that Y2 found out:
She was not treated fairly because she was a woman and was black.
Bessie was determined to learn to fly an aeroplane and moved from the USA to France to achieve her ambition.
Y2 learned that Bessie Coleman was an inspiration to women and black people to achieve their goals and one of the children commented that “she shows us that people can do anything they want no matter what they look like or the colour of their skin.”
